Dear Parents.

Hopefully your child came home each day last week with the exciting news of our events for Healthy Eating Week. This is our first step towards being awarded with a Health Promoting School Flag. We all had so much fun learning about a healthy balanced diet. The Working Group would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard with us especially the teachers who incorporated the theme of healthy eating into as many lessons as appropriate.

On Monday our very first Smoothie day ran so smoothly (!) which was totally due to such brilliant background organisation - there were blenders volunteered, helping hands on call and so many curious and adventurous mouths to sample our tasty treats. Please have a look at our website for the photographs. A massive thank you to the mothers who helped out and to Southern Foods who not only offered a fantastic array of fruit & veg for the children to taste but also discount vouchers for the children. We would also like to thank the Mc Cullagh family for their very generous donation which subsidised our Smoothie Day.

If you want to try out the smoothies at home, here are the recipes:

On Wednesday the children impressed Mrs O' Mahony with their menu brainstorming sessions in drama. We were quite surprised with the range of exotic foods that they "packed" in their picnic baskets! What experienced palates we have! We may also have some likely candidates in St Catherine's for the next Master Chef show, according to the input from the senior classes. Well done girls! Our drama groups then took part in designing the most unusual rainbow. It's quite amusing how many different shades of food that landed on our multicoloured arc!

Thursday we closed our poster competition. The art that brightened up our halla for Healthy Eating Week was an insight into the depth of understanding your children have of the importance of a healthy balanced diet. St Catherine's would like to thank you for your part in and nurturing and maintaining this important message. We have seen a huge change in the lunch boxes, and next week we will be giving a special prize to each class for the healthiest treats on Friday!

Last Friday evening the senior classes put on quite a show for the whole school. We enjoyed funny songs about grape eating ducks and we laughed at poems about mashed potatoes. 3rd and 4th class wowed us with their fantastic story writing and we even had a drama written and performed by our students!

I think all involved will agree that St Catherine's very first Healthy Eating Week was a tremendous success and we are already looking forward to the next one.

We hope you had a healthy munching bank holiday!

Kind Regards-

Ms Morris, Ms Crowley & The HPS Working Group.
